Blog

Occasional posts from (usually) Bram and (sometimes) Monica about comics in general, this comic in particular, art, design, publishing, visual culture, and far, far too many things about actual squirrels.

Via Liz, some sci-fi takes on classic artwork. Since they brought up the Wolverine art variants, worth noting that Marvel's doing it again with the Avengers.

I generally object to most comic book movies. Comic books tell certain kinds of stories well. Movies tell other kinds of stories well. Comic book movies usually are the worst of both and just turn it into a "who would you cast as …" thing.

The Goon trailer, however, makes me a believer.

Another page I recently lettered. Pleased that Lee chose this one to showcase, 'cause I'm really happy with how it worked out. Need some lettering? Send an email.

Chris posted some pages I lettered for him. This was a fun one, figuring out how to distinguish, but still relate, the voices in the character's head and give them some personality.

I'm offering free lettering for independent comics — if you've got a comic in need of lettering, send an email.

Hey! I can has sue?
A great day at Albuquerque Comic Con yesterday — 7000 BC will still be there for the rest of the show.

And speaking of cons — our old buddy Matt's Xoc will be premiering in San Diego

I'll be at the Albuquerque Comic Con on Friday at the 7000 BC table — check out the latest from the group, including our new Jams collections, designed by Monica. And stop by Jolene's table, she's at her first con with some amazing prints and other art.
"If any official institution was in a position to celebrate the collection of Leninists, Trotskyites and heavy drinkers that made up the New York School, it was the CIA." Now it can be revealed: the CIA used modern art as a weapon.

And, via Andy, in other war-and-art news, Clooney will be making a movie about the Monuments Men. The special division in charge of repatriating looted art has long been an interest of mine and provides the backdrop for The Darkness From Warsaw.

For anybody who might be running across this site for the first time — welcome!

This is the home of the serialized comic that Monica and I produce (admittedly, more than just somewhat infrequently), Raised By Squirrels — which is available for free by downloading the PDFs to the left (starting at the bottom) or for purchase via those links on the side or at comic shops in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

RBS is released under the Panel Press imprint, where we offer a few other comics, including Death, Cold As Steel and The Darkness From Warsaw which are set in the RBS universe, but at an earlier time, and feature art by Jamie Chase. And our newest series New West, with art by Caleb Yeider.

We're also members of 7000 BC, a Northern New Mexico-based comic creators collective. You can check out their Web site for more, including current activities and some free downloads.

The Guns of Shadow Valley — an addition to 2011's (possibly all theoretical) Best of List? I hadn't heard of it until the beginning of this year, but I've now spent a good deal of time getting caught up. And since — brace yourself — there hasn't been a post since September, I suppose it could qualify …

Killer promo at Big Adventure Comics this week, if you catch their ad in the Reporter or Monitor.

My Best of Comics list … is coming together. Slowly. Maybe. But a favorite read from 2011, Rebecca's War Dog of the Week, showcases its best. Somewhere in there is my image of the year.
Yesterday's project: setting the type and pulling initial proofs for the wood type poster James and I are making.
